From the time St. Timothy's School was established in Mvuleni Community it has brought a big impact.
1. Educationally - Vulnerable children who have lost their parents or whose parents are extremely poor get free education, reducing the number of street children. Also, parents who are able to pay school fees send the kids to our school.
The above photo is the group of twenty vulnerable students receiving the bicycles from St Timothy's School in January 2016.
Many of these students had to walk five to ten kilometers in the morning and then again at the end of the school day. The long travel time between home and school causes them to report late to class and their performance is negatively affected because they have less time to rest and concentrate on their studies.
Additionally, vulnerability for female student increases due to the lack of safety along the roads. Female students face sexual assault on the way to school, which contribute to high teen pregnancy rates in Tanzania and a greater risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
The donated bicycles will guarantee these students a full school day and ample time to concentrate on their studies. This will undoubtedly improve their performance. The bicycles will also allow them to carry their peers who face the same challenges.
2. Financially - St. Timothy's School has employed a number of workers from the community of Mvuleni. For example, all the bricks which were used in building the classrooms and boarding home were bought from the brick bakers of Mvuleni. This has provided employment to many women and me. Also, many of our workers go to buy things from the shops and go to the salons of Mvuleni community. This makes a good circulation of money in the community.
